A Men's Gift Guide
Thoughtful gifts for Fathers' Day, but also for men-who-are-tricky-to-buy-for generally
Can we all agree that men are a nightmare to buy for. Is that just a me thing? Or maybe it’s just my own husband? But I literally just never know what to buy. Girls/girlfriends/mothers are pure joy to shop for: nice smelly things; a box of my good chocolates; that novel I just finished reading and really want you to read too; pretty things that don’t really have a purpose, but are just terribly nice to have in your life. All these are good, if not terribly original options, for presents for women. But: men! I find impossibly hard to know what to buy for men.
Anyhoo, Father’s Day is coming up, here in the UK anyway (confusingly Father’s Day falls in March in Italy); and that’s prompted me to get my thinking cap on. In case you’re looking for gift ideas too - for Father’s Day, perhaps, or just for men generally - here are a few good ones.
A nice tote bag, which you can have monogrammed or customised with a cute message. Useful; easy; hard to go wrong with. Who doesn’t love (if not need) a tote bag? I love this classic LL Bean design: it’s classic; has quite a masculine feel about it; and is a nice sturdy bag so practical too.
A giant tub of crisps because: who doesn’t love crisps? And how utterly spoiling to be given such a fabulously large tin of them. Plus crisps that come in a tin: how chic.
This is such a magical book. I love how it encourages you to look up and see the world another way.
And this one here is another beautiful book. If in doubt, books really are the best presents. Beautifully illustrated, this is obviously a good choice for anyone who loves birds - but also, I think, for the person who doesn’t know quite how much they love birds yet.
You can’t go wrong with a hand written card, of course. Write a special note in there: these are the gifts that we treasure for years to come.
If he’s into gardening, these are the Rolls Royce of gardening secateurs. A very good present.
