On our way travelling from Tuscany down to the Amalfi Coast last week, my husband, Anthony, and I stopped off for one night in Rome. We arrived by train in the late afternoon and headed straight to our hotel. A quick moment here for a shout out to Italian train travel which is affordable, magnificently air-conditioned, efficient and fabulously comfortable.

In Rome, we checked into a room at Hotel Locarno where I’ve stayed before and has become a firm favourite: the location, on a quiet street just off the Piazza del Popolo, is pretty much perfection; and the hotel has a charmingly old fashioned, Wes Anderson-esque quality about it; the concierge is excellent; there’s a lovely, shady courtyard where you can have a drink and/or breakfast in the morning; a fabulous roof-terrace-with-views situation; and a bar with an innately glamorous vibe about it. As far as I’m concerned, it’s pretty much all you could wish for in a hotel.
